As Max Verstappen edges closer to securing his fourth Formula 1 World Championship, McLaren’s CEO, Zak Brown, recently shared an interesting insight about Verstappen’s racing journey, highlighting a “regret” the Dutch driver may have. According to Brown, Verstappen likely harbors some regret over not making a move to McLaren earlier in his career, before his rise at Red Bull.

Verstappen, who began his F1 career with Toro Rosso (now AlphaTauri) before being promoted to Red Bull Racing, has experienced remarkable success with the team, including multiple championships. However, McLaren, with their history of producing competitive cars, especially in the past few years, has made great strides in closing the gap to the front of the grid.

Brown speculated that Verstappen, given McLaren’s recent resurgence with talented drivers like Lando Norris and Oscar Piastri, might have thrived at McLaren earlier in his career. He emphasized that McLaren’s performance improvements, backed by a growing technical partnership with Mercedes and their ambitious leadership, could have provided Verstappen with the platform to challenge for titles sooner.

Though Verstappen has achieved tremendous success at Red Bull, Brown’s comments underscore the notion that McLaren’s current trajectory could have provided a different, equally compelling route to glory for one of F1’s best talents. While Verstappen’s career is certainly far from over, these reflections spark intriguing “what if” scenarios in the world of F1.
