In an exclusive interview, Rocco Welsh opens up about his decision to choose Penn State Wrestling over Oklahoma State. Welsh, a highly sought-after recruit, was torn between two prestigious programs, each offering its own unique advantages. Ultimately, his choice was influenced by the outstanding coaching staff at Penn State, led by the renowned Cael Sanderson.
“I’ve always admired Cael and his coaching philosophy,” Welsh said. “The way he connects with his athletes and develops them both on and off the mat is something I really value. Penn State also has a winning culture, and I want to be part of that legacy.”
Welsh noted the strong team dynamic at Penn State, with athletes pushing each other to reach their full potential. The state-of-the-art facilities and the team’s emphasis on discipline and hard work also played a significant role in his decision.
Despite Oklahoma State’s rich history and strong recruiting efforts, Welsh felt that Penn State’s environment and coaching style were a better fit for his personal and athletic development. “It’s about finding a place where you can grow and succeed,” he said.
