Penn State head football coach James Franklin has been suspended indefinitely following allegations of interference in medical decisions concerning student-athletes. The suspension comes in the wake of a lawsuit filed by former team doctor Dr. Scott Lynch, who accused Franklin of attempting to influence medical and return-to-play decisions, thereby compromising player safety.

Dr. Lynch, who served as the team’s orthopedic physician and director of athletic medicine since 2014, claimed that Franklin’s actions led to his removal from the position in March 2019 as retaliation for resisting the coach’s interference. An internal investigation by Penn State acknowledged “friction” between Franklin and the medical staff but did not conclusively determine any violations.
Further testimonies during the trial revealed that Franklin, along with former athletic director Sandy Barbour, allegedly pressured medical staff to medically disqualify a player who had attempted suicide, aiming to free up a scholarship spot.
In light of these serious allegations and the ongoing legal proceedings, Penn State University has decided to suspend Coach Franklin indefinitely to ensure the integrity of the football program and prioritize the well-being of its student-athletes.
