In a performance that will be etched into the annals of Southeastern Conference (SEC) basketball history, Tennessee Volunteers point guard Zakai Zeigler delivered a remarkable display of skill and leadership during the 2024-25 season. On December 23, 2024, Zeigler recorded 17 points and a career-high 15 assists in an 82-64 victory over Middle Tennessee State, becoming the first SEC player in two decades to achieve such a feat in a non-conference game.

Zeigler’s exceptional playmaking continued as he surpassed the school’s career assist record previously held by Johnny Darden, notably during the Volunteers’ 77-62 win against Wofford in the NCAA Tournament’s first round on March 21, 2025. His defensive prowess was equally impressive, earning him the SEC Defensive Player of the Year award for the 2023-24 season.
Throughout the season, Zeigler consistently delivered clutch performances, including a 16-point, 10-assist double-double against Vanderbilt on January 18, 2025, and a 21-point game against Missouri on February 5, 2025. His contributions were instrumental in leading Tennessee to significant victories and solidifying their status as a formidable force in college basketball.
