Karlyn Pickens, a junior pitcher for the Tennessee Lady Volunteers, made history on March 24, 2025, by throwing the fastest pitch ever recorded in NCAA softball—a blistering 78.2 mph fastball during a game against Arkansas. This achievement surpassed the previous record of 77 mph, set by former Lady Vol Monica Abbott in 2012.

Abbott, renowned for her trailblazing career and mentorship within the sport, had set a benchmark that Pickens had been aiming for. Reflecting on her accomplishment, Pickens expressed profound respect for Abbott, acknowledging her as a mentor and inspiration throughout her development as a pitcher.

In response to Pickens’ record-breaking pitch, Abbott conveyed her admiration and support, stating, “Karlyn’s dedication and hard work have truly paid off. It’s inspiring to see the next generation push the boundaries of the game. I’m proud of her achievement and excited to see how she continues to elevate the sport.”

This exchange highlights the camaraderie and mutual respect that define the softball community, as past and present athletes celebrate each other’s successes and contribute to the sport’s ongoing evolution.
