Mitchell Mesenbrink, a standout wrestler for the Penn State Nittany Lions, has been making waves in the wrestling world with his exceptional performances. Born in 2003 in Hartland, Wisconsin, Mesenbrink began wrestling at a young age, following in the footsteps of his father, John Mesenbrink, a former wrestler at Drake University. He attended Arrowhead High School, where he achieved the honor of a three-time WIAA state champion, earning recognition in national high school rankings. citeturn0search2

 

In 2022, Mesenbrink secured a silver medal at the U20 World Championships and clinched gold at both the U20 Pan American Championships and the U20 US National Championships, competing at 70 kilograms in freestyle wrestling. He initially committed to California Baptist University but later transferred to Penn State in April 2023, joining the Nittany Lions under the guidance of coach Cael Sanderson. citeturn0search2

 

During the 2023–2024 season, Mesenbrink moved up to the 74-kilogram weight class. He repeated his earlier successes by winning both the U20 US National and Pan American Championships, and he became the U20 World Champion at 74 kilograms. Competing for Penn State, he secured individual titles at the Journeymen Classic and the Black Knight Invitational, maintaining an undefeated 12–0 dual meet record during the regular season. At the Big Ten Championships, Mesenbrink clinched the title with a remarkable comeback victory over two-time All-American Dean Hamiti. In April 2024, Mesenbrink made his senior-level debut at the US Olympic Team Trials. After a win over U17 World champion Ladarion Lockett, he faced seven-time Olympic and World champion Jordan Burroughs in the semifinals. Mesenbrink secured a bronze medal by defeating Asian medalist Magomedrasul Asluev from Bahrain at the U23 World Championships later that year. citeturn0search2
