“Jeff Marek Predicts Maple Leafs to Dive Into ‘Bidding War’ for Panthers Free Agent”….
Hockey analyst Jeff Marek anticipates that the Toronto Maple Leafs will actively pursue Florida Panthers forward Sam Bennett if he becomes an unrestricted free agent on July 1, 2025. Speaking on “The Leafs Nation” show, Marek described the potential competition for Bennett’s services as a “cattle auction,” indicating that multiple teams, including the Maple Leafs, would be eager to acquire him.

Bennett, 28, is concluding a four-year, $17.7 million contract with the Panthers, carrying a $4.4 million cap hit this season. His performance includes 20 goals and 21 assists, totaling 42 points in 63 games, marking his fourth consecutive season with over 40 points. Known for his physicality and playoff experience, highlighted by his contribution to Florida’s Stanley Cup victory last season, Bennett is expected to be a highly sought-after free agent.
Agent Darren Ferris, who represents both Bennett and Maple Leafs star Mitch Marner, is known for guiding his clients to explore free agency. Marek noted, “Darren Ferris likes to…take his guys to market. It doesn’t mean they can’t re-sign, but they’ve earned that right.”
The Maple Leafs’ ability to bid for Bennett may hinge on the contract situations of Marner and John Tavares, both set to become free agents next summer with cap hits of $10.9 million and $11 million, respectively. Decisions regarding their futures could free up the necessary cap space for Toronto to make a competitive offer to Bennett.
As the free agency period approaches, the Maple Leafs are expected to be among several teams vying for Bennett’s signature, aiming to bolster their roster for the upcoming season.
