Tottenham will NOT trigger their £8.5m option to buy Timo Werner this summer…

Tottenham Hotspur have reportedly decided against exercising their £8.5 million option to purchase Timo Werner permanently this summer. The German forward, who initially joined Spurs on a six-month loan from RB Leipzig in January 2024, extended his stay for an additional season but has struggled to make a significant impact. This season, Werner has managed just one goal in 27 appearances, leading the club to reconsider retaining him.

Werner’s tenure at Tottenham has been marked by underwhelming performances and limited contributions. In December, during a 1-1 Europa League draw against Rangers, manager Ange Postecoglou publicly criticized Werner’s display, labeling it “unacceptable” for a player of his experience. Such incidents have contributed to the club’s decision to forego the purchase option.

With Werner’s departure imminent, Tottenham are expected to seek fresh attacking options in the upcoming transfer window. The club has already secured Mathys Tel on loan from Bayern Munich and holds a £45.8 million option to make the move permanent. Tel’s versatility across the forward line positions him as a potential long-term asset for Spurs.

As Werner prepares to return to RB Leipzig, his future remains uncertain. There is tentative interest from MLS side New York Red Bulls, but any potential move would depend on financial considerations and Werner’s willingness to leave European football.
