KNOXVILLE, Tenn. — Tennessee Lady Volunteers head coach Kim Caldwell has been honored with the 2024 Spalding Maggie Dixon NCAA Division I Rookie Coach of the Year award. This prestigious accolade recognizes her exceptional performance during her inaugural season at Marshall University, where she led the Thundering Herd to a remarkable 26-7 overall record and a 17-1 mark in the Sun Belt Conference. Under Caldwell’s leadership, Marshall secured both the regular season and tournament titles, earning their first NCAA Tournament berth since 1997.

Caldwell’s coaching philosophy emphasizes a high-octane offense and pressure defense, strategies that propelled Marshall to national prominence in several statistical categories. The team led the nation in three-point field goals attempted and ranked third in three-pointers made per game, averaging over ten per contest. Additionally, Marshall was fourth nationally in scoring offense, averaging 85.3 points per game, and second in forcing 24.2 turnovers per game.
In April 2024, Caldwell was appointed as the head coach of the Tennessee Lady Volunteers, becoming only the fourth head coach in the program’s NCAA era. Her impressive track record includes a 217-31 (.875) career record over eight seasons, with eight NCAA Tournament appearances and seven conference championships. Prior to her tenure at Marshall, Caldwell led Glenville State to the 2022 NCAA Division II National Championship and was honored with the Pat Summitt Trophy as the WBCA’s NCAA Division II National Coach of the Year.
Caldwell’s dynamic coaching style and commitment to excellence have generated excitement and optimism among Lady Vols fans and the broader women’s basketball community.
