Insider: Maple Leafs Would ‘Move a Mountain’ to Sign $55.5 Million Star

The Toronto Maple Leafs could make a major splash in free agency this offseason as they eye Colorado Avalanche star Mikko Rantanen, who was recently traded to the Carolina Hurricanes. With Mitch Marner set to become a top free agent on July 1, the Leafs will have a crucial decision to make regarding their future roster.

According to NHL insider Elliotte Friedman, Toronto is among the teams willing to go all-in for Rantanen if he becomes available. “Teams will make room for this guy,” Friedman said on NHL Network Radio. “If they have a feeling he’s going to come to them—New York Rangers, Toronto—it won’t just be the teams with cap space. It’ll be teams saying, ‘Okay, if I have to move a mountain to get Mikko Rantanen, we’re going to try to do it.’”

Rantanen, currently in the final year of his six-year, $55.5 million contract, has been in stellar form this season. In 55 games, he has tallied 26 goals and 40 assists for 66 points. If Toronto pursues him, it would likely signal the end of Marner’s tenure with the franc
