Born on November 25, 1949, in Chicago, Illinois, Joy’s career spanned over five decades, during which he became a central figure in motorsports commentary. He began his journey in 1970 as a public address announcer at Riverside Park Speedway in Massachusetts while attending the University of Hartford and later Emerson College.
In 1998, Joy joined Fox Sports as the lead play-by-play announcer for NASCAR events, a position he held with distinction. His insightful commentary and deep understanding of the sport endeared him to fans nationwide. Beyond NASCAR, Joy was also known for his expertise in collector car auctions, serving as an analyst for A&E Networks’ History Channel and FYI.
